Telecom group wants SIM cards tied to WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram

India

India's top telecom lobby (COAI) is pushing for a rule that would force messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal to stay linked to your active SIM card—not just during sign-up.
Right now, these apps keep working even if you swap or remove your SIM.
COAI says making SIM-binding permanent could help trace users better and cut down on cyber fraud.

Why does it matter?

If this goes through, messaging apps would need to follow the same strict rules as mobile operators—think user verification and government access when needed.
While COAI argues it's about security and fair play with telecom companies, this could make life harder for people who travel with local SIMs or use multiple devices.
It might also limit access for those who rely on Wi-Fi-only messaging.
