TMC suspends MLA over Babri Masjid-style mosque plan in Bengal
Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suspended its Bharatpur MLA, Humayun Kabir, after he announced plans to build a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad's Beldanga.
The party accused him of stirring communal tensions and alleged he was being encouraged by the BJP to do so.
Even after being suspended, Kabir says he'll move forward with the project and launch his own political party on December 22.
Why does it matter?
Kabir's announcement—timed for the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary—sparked tension in Murshidabad, a district with a large minority population.
TMC called his actions "gross indiscipline" and said he'd been warned before.
Now, local authorities have taken the issue to court, seeking a stay on the foundation-laying ceremony.
With elections ahead, this clash shows how religious symbols can become flashpoints in Bengal politics and why parties are quick to act when peace is at risk.
