#CareerBytes: Which subjects should engineers choose for UPSC optional exams?

The UPSC Civil Services exam is one of the toughest in India, thus thorough preparation and solid determination are vital to crack it. As is common knowledge, apart from the mandatory papers, there are some optional subjects which the candidates have to choose for themselves. Here, we suggest top subject choices for UPSC optional papers, for engineers.

Do you know?
What are the various optional subjects available for UPSC exam

The list of optional subjects for the UPSC Mains exam include Chemistry, Economics, History, Geography, Public Administration, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, among others.

Information
One must always choose optional subjects they're really interested in

While choosing optional subjects for the UPSC exam, a candidate shouldn't necessarily select subjects they've studied in school or college. What matters the most is that one must be genuinely interested in the subject, and then if they've studied it as well, that's a plus.

Subjects (1)
Chemistry and Civil Engineering

Chemistry: One of the most elementary subjects for engineering students is Chemistry. If an aspirant is interested in the subject and has good understanding of the basic concepts, then they can choose. Civil Engineering: Civil Engineering graduates, who have a knack for the subject and decent scoring record can go for the same as their optional subject in UPSC.

Subjects (2)
Electrical Engineering and Mathematics

Electrical Engineering: Students with an Electrical engineering background may find it wise to choose it as one of their optional subjects for UPSC. Mathematics: Though students might find it a little difficult to score high in Mathematics, but those who have a knack for Maths, and have strong conceptual clarity, can go for it as one of their optional subjects in the UPSC exam.

Information
Physics is another top-choice for engineer aspirants, in UPSC exams

Physics is one of the most basic subjects for engineers. Although, the subject is challenging and not the best one to boost up your score, those aspirants who consider it their strong zone, can select it as one of their optional choices.
