3 arrested in the nursing student ragging case

Karnataka Police announced that 3 seniors from Al Qamar College of Nursing had been arrested for forcing an 18-year-old nursing student to drink phenyl. The incident had taken place on 9 May as a result of a ragging session gone wrong in Karnataka. A case of attempted murder was registered alongside a negligence complaint of negligence and not informing the police on the college.

SC rules ragging as human right abuse

It was not until 2007 that the Supreme Court intervened and recognised ragging as an "act of human right abuse".

Dalit girl made to drink phenyl during ragging

A nursing student at the Al Qamar College of Nursing in Gulbarga, Karnataka, was purportedly forced to drink phenol by her seniors. The girl sustained severe internal burns and was taken to the ICU in a hospital in Gulbarga, and later moved to the Kozhikode Medical College. The girl hailing from Kerala had taken an education loan of Rs.3 lakhs to study nursing.

    Nursing college denies ragging reports

The girl's college principal denied a case of ragging saying: "There is no ragging involved. The girl drank the phenol because of some family problems".

Kerala police coordinates with Karnataka to catch the culprits

The Kerala police has sought Karnataka police's help to record a case against two college students for ragging a Dalit nursing student from Kerala. The circle inspector of police from Kerala said that they had recorded the student's statement through a special messenger as they have no jurisdiction in Karnataka. The accused will be tried under Kerala Ragging Act and Atrocities under SC/ST Act.

Anger over the ragging incident; HRD ministry to rope-in Kohli

The HRD ministry has roped in cricketer Virat Kohli to send a strong anti-ragging message after the news of the violent ragging of the Kerala girl spread. People protested and demanded justice for the girl who was said to be in a critical state, being fed through tubes and unable to swallow even water. The Kerala government said that it would take care of her medical treatment.
