Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted how language shapes a nation's identity at an event in Delhi on Thursday, June 26, 2025, saying, "Language is not merely a medium of communication; it is the soul of a nation."
He also pointed out that history and culture thrive best through our own languages.
Take pride in your mother tongue: Shah
Shah encouraged everyone to protect and celebrate Indian languages, especially Hindi, which he described as a friend of all Indian languages.
He emphasized that taking pride in your mother tongue is like breaking free from the mentality of slavery.
Importantly, he said there should be no opposition to any language—Indian or foreign.
Offer engineering, medical courses in regional languages
Shah called on states to offer medical and engineering courses in regional languages, promising central support.
Big exams like JEE and NEET now happen in 13 languages, while 95% of candidates for the constable exam are choosing their mother tongue.
He urged young people to speak and think more in their native language to keep India's linguistic heritage strong.
