Just a few steps out in the summer sun make you feel faint. This is because as we sweat, we lose electrolytes that are essential for several bodily functions. Electrolytes are minerals in our bodies that have an electric charge. They regulate the pH balance, hydration, muscle function, blood pressure and nerve function. Here are a few electrolyte-rich drinks for summer:

    Coconut water

Natural coconut water is low in calories and sugar but rich in electrolytes like potassium and magnesium. However, it doesn't contain as much sodium to replace what we lose while sweating. Potassium is essential for the healthy functioning of the kidneys, and muscle contractions. Coconut water may also help promote heart health. It contains antioxidants, which neutralize oxidative stress and free radicals.

    Fruit juices

Watermelon juice is a rich source of potassium and magnesium and provides small amounts of calcium and phosphorus as well. Natural watermelon juice and other fruit juices contain several electrolytes but are usually low in sodium and high in sugar. Orange juice contains potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus as well. Fruit juices are generally a great source of vitamins and antioxidants.

    Milk

Well, milk isn't called a complete food for nothing! When it comes to electrolyte drinks, cow milk ranks right up there as it contains electrolytes like potassium, calcium, and sodium. Cow milk also provides a healthy combination of carbohydrates and protein, and the former is also known to prevent dehydration. Being a rich source of protein, milk is an excellent workout drink.

    Electrolyte infused drinks

These infused waters or powders mixed with water are an amazing way to replenish electrolytes and keep your body hydrated. Plus, they are also low-calorie. However, make sure to purchase the right brand as some of them contain a lot of added sugars. While some brands are available at a reasonable price others are pretty expensive, so consult a doctor before buying.

    Sports drinks

Sports drinks usually contain more sodium than fruit juices and are so extremely beneficial for sportspersons. These drinks also contain easily digestible carbohydrates along with other electrolytes. Their formulation helps sportspersons maintain optimum hydration levels. However, these sports drinks do have some drawbacks as they may contain artificial flavors, colors, and added sugar, which aren't needed for anybody.
