Mumbai: 45-year-old fashion designer found dead in her flat

Sunita Singh, 45, a fashion designer, was found dead in the bathroom of her flat in Lokhandwala on Thursday. She lived in the Cross Gate building along with her son Lakshya, 23, and his fiancée, Ashpriya Banerjee, 22. Lakshya told the police the bathroom door was locked from the inside; when there was no response, he broke open the door to find Sunita dead.

The son panicked after seeing her body, went to temple

"After Lakshya found his mother dead, he said he panicked and went to a temple and then to a jewelry shop where he knew the jeweler. The neighbors of the deceased then informed us. A call was received at around 1:30pm in the afternoon," said an officer familiar with the case. When police arrived at the scene, it was already 2pm in the noon.

For now, an accidental death report has been registered

"For now, an accidental death report has been registered. We are investigating the case. The woman's son and his fiancée are being questioned along with the jeweler and the person who had brought the private ambulance to the building," said Shailesh Pasalwad, senior police inspector, Oshiwara police station. "Prima facie we suspect...the woman slipped in the bathroom and suffered head injuries," another officer said.

Police await the autopsy report to confirm cause of death

"Lakshya told the police that Sunita used to sometimes smoke marijuana. There were also minor injuries on her face. The cause and nature of the injuries and the confirmation of marijuana could only be ascertained after the post-mortem," police said. "The family had shifted to the Cross Gate a few months ago and lived in the two-bedroom flat," a resident of the building said.
