Ambika Soni is a senior Indian National Congress (INC) politician and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Punjab. She did her graduation from the University of Delhi. She was family friends with the Nehru-Gandhis and joined the INC in 1969 at the behest of Indira Gandhi. Soni grew as a leader in Congress gradually and held key posts within the party and its governments. She was the President of the Indian Youth Congress during the Emergency years (1975-77) as well as the President of the All India Mahila Congress in late 1990s. A Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Punjab since 1996, Soni served as the Minister of Tourism and Culture in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-I government from 2006 to 2009 and as Minister of Information & Broadcasting in the UPA-II during 2009-12. Soni has been a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) since 1999.
