Modi slams TMC for 'shameful' insult to President Murmu
What's the story
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal for disrespecting President Droupadi Murmu during her recent visit. The incident, which took place on Saturday, was termed "shameful and unprecedented" by PM Modi. He said the President's remarks had saddened people across India, especially those who believe in empowering tribal communities.
Event criticism
President Murmu raises concerns about arrangements
The controversy erupted after President Murmu raised concerns about the arrangements for an international event in Siliguri. The event, the 9th International Santal Conference, was organized by the International Santal Council. Speaking at another event in Bidhannagar, she questioned why such a large gathering was held at a small venue in Siliguri.
Protocol issues
Incident reflects poorly on TMC government: PM Modi
President Murmu also noted protocol lapses during her visit, as neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any state minister received her. In response to these remarks, PM Modi said the incident reflected poorly on the TMC government and hurt the dignity of the President's office. He added that the TMC Government of West Bengal has truly crossed all limits, adding that their administration was responsible for this insult to the President.
Party response
BJP joins in, calls out TMC government
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also joined the criticism, accusing the state government of disrespecting India's highest constitutional office. The party's West Bengal unit said such disregard for the dignity of the President signals a deeper erosion of constitutional propriety and governance. Union Minister Piyush Goyal also slammed the TMC government for breaching protocol during this international conference, calling it an affront to India's highest constitutional office.
Cultural appreciation
President Murmu praises India's tribal communities
During the conference, President Murmu praised India's tribal communities for preserving their culture over centuries. She urged them to embrace modern development while protecting their traditions, language, and environment. The visit was originally planned as a two-day program starting March 6 with a Darjeeling trip, but was shortened after CV Ananda Bose's sudden resignation on Thursday. RN Ravi has since been given additional charge as West Bengal Governor.
