AI fixes blurry images from James Webb Space Telescope

Technology

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was having trouble with blurry images, thanks to some electronic glitches affecting the Aperture Masking Interferometer (API) on the Near-InfraRed Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS).
But now, a clever AI algorithm called AMIGO—created by Max Charles and Louis Desdoigts at the University of Sydney—has fixed the issue.
Thanks to this tech upgrade, API-assisted images are sharper than ever.

AMIGO helps JWST capture crisp cosmic views

With AMIGO on board, JWST has snapped crisp shots of a faint exoplanet and a red-brown dwarf star 133 light-years away.
It's also captured detailed views of black hole jets, Jupiter's moon Io, and even distant stellar winds.
Launched in late 2021 and running since July 2022, JWST is now set to keep uncovering cosmic mysteries with its improved vision.
