What's the story

Apple is expected to expand the iPhone line with three flagships taking off from where iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr left off. However, a new report suggests, the Cupertino giant may have another device in the works, one that would be smaller than the top-end models but equally powerful. And, it is tipped to launch sometime around March 2020. Here are the details.

Features

iPhone 8 like device with 4.7-inch screen

The device in question will be like a revised version of iPhone 8 focused on the mid-tier segment, which Apple would certainly like to target as Chinese players rise. China's Economic Daily News (EDN) cited sources from Taiwan-based Fubon Securities Investment Trust to claim that the said iPhone will have a 4.7-inch full HD LCD display and the improved A13 chip under the hood.

Added stuff

Plus, there will be a single rear camera

The report claims that the small iPhone will retain a single camera on the back but doesn't say much about its capabilities. It will have 128GB of storage and will probably pair up with Touch ID, as we are talking about an iPhone 8 revision with updated capabilities. Apple switched to Face ID after trimming bezels in the newer iPhone X.

Launch

Launch expected in March 2020

While we can't be 100% sure, EDN indicates Apple plans to launch this device around March 2020, much like how iPhone SE followed iPhone 6s. Word is that Apple is going to produce some 20 million units of the device, with all the orders going to Taiwanese contract manufacturer Pegatron. Meanwhile, the price is tipped at NT$ 20,000, which roughly translates to Rs. 45,000.

Opportunity

Small iPhone could do the trick for Apple

If this report turns out to be true, Apple could finally capture the mid-tier segment which has been taken over by the likes of OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. To note, this year, Apple is rumored to launch three devices: iPhone XI and XI Max with triple cameras and OLED displays and an iPhone Xr successor with LCD and a dual-camera setup.
