December's underrated Ursid meteor shower peaks soon
Heads up, skywatchers: the Ursid meteor shower is set to peak overnight on December 21-22.
While it's not as famous as some other showers, you can still catch five to 10 meteors per hour if skies are dark and clear.
The best time to watch is from midnight until dawn, with the radiant point in Ursa Minor climbing highest just before sunrise.
Where and when should you look?
Face north and scan about halfway up the sky—especially in the hours before dawn on December 22 for your best shot at spotting meteors.
Under ideal conditions, you might even see a few extra "bonus" meteors each hour.
Tips for catching the show
Good news: the crescent moon won't spoil the darkness this year.
For a better view, find a spot away from city lights and plan to stay out for at least an hour (it helps your eyes adjust).
Bundle up—it'll be cold—and use a red flashlight so your night vision stays sharp while you stargaze.
