DTU researchers work on smart rescue drone for people overboard
Technology
Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) are working on a smart rescue drone that could make a real difference for people who fall overboard.
The drone launches from moving ships, uses high-tech cameras to spot someone in the water, and drops a GPS-equipped inflatable life jacket to help keep them safe until rescuers arrive.
Drone finds over 80% in tests
The drone weighs about 24.8kg, carries up to 20kg, and can fly for 30 minutes, covering 1 square kilometer per flight.
In tests over the Kattegat sea strait, it found over 80% of targets.
Researchers are also building a system so the drone can land back on a moving ship in just 3 seconds.
The project is still in progress but could seriously boost safety and speed up rescues at sea.
