ExoMars orbiter spots volcanic signs and HCl at Alba Mons
Technology
Turns out Mars isn't as quiet as we thought.
Scientists using the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter have spotted signs of volcanic activity near the Alba Mons volcano, including hydrogen chloride gas that hints at magma lurking below the surface.
Alba Mons fissures resemble Earth vents
This discovery could reshape what we know about Mars and its chances of hosting life.
Researchers found long cracks and mineral stains around Alba Mons, similar to volcanic vents on Earth.
As Professor Daniel Mege puts it, these hydrothermal spots might be "Looking for martian life in the seeping fissures of the Alba Mons region would make a lot of sense." especially back when ancient Mars was warmer and wetter.
