Getty Images wins in court against AI tool Stable Diffusion
Getty Images just notched a partial victory against Stability AI in London's High Court. The big issue? Getty Images accused Stability AI of using its photos to train its AI tool, Stable Diffusion.
The judge sided with Getty on some trademark claims but tossed out most of the copyright complaints. Part of Getty's case was also dropped because they couldn't prove where the training happened.
The ruling isn't a game-changer for AI copyright laws
Judge Joanna Smith described her findings as "both historic and extremely limited in scope," so don't expect major changes to AI copyright law just yet.
After the ruling, Getty's stock took a 6.6% dip, and claims about importing illegal AI models into the UK were dismissed too.
This legal battle isn't over, but it highlights how tricky copyright rules are getting as AI keeps evolving.
