What's the story

Instagram's "Hidden Words" feature empowers you to take control and eliminate offensive comments and unwanted messages on your Android device. With a few easy steps, you can customize your social media experience, keeping it positive and free from negativity. This tutorial will guide you through accessing and enabling the Hidden Words feature, adding custom words and phrases, and implementing these filters to safeguard your online space.

Access steps

Accessing the hidden words feature

To start using the Hidden Words feature on Instagram for Android, first, open the Instagram app. Tap on your profile photo at the bottom right corner of the screen to navigate to your profile. Next, tap the menu button, indicated by three horizontal lines, at the top right corner. Then, select "Settings" from the dropdown menu to continue.

Enable filtering

Enabling hidden words

Go to Settings, and click on "Privacy" to open privacy settings. Find "Hidden Words" in this list and tap on it. There are options like "Hide comments" - it automatically hides offensive comments; "Advanced comment filtering" - it applies stricter filters; and "Hide message requests" - it hides unwanted direct messages. Switch them on as per your choice.

Customization

Adding custom words and phrases

To further customize your filters, click on "Manage custom words and phrases" under "Hidden Words." In this section, you can input any particular words, numbers, phrases, or emojis you don't want to appear in comments or message requests. Make sure to separate each item with commas before clicking "Add" to save your entries. This way, you have more control over what you see.

Activation

Applying custom filters

After you have added your custom list of words or phrases, make sure both "Hide comments" and "Hide message requests" switches are turned on under this section. By enabling these settings, both incoming comments and message requests will be filtered based on your custom list, fostering a more positive environment for your online interactions.

Reviewing content

Viewing hidden comments (optional)

Ever wonder if you might be missing out on some comments due to the Hidden Words feature? Just head back to this section in Settings. Tap on "See Limited Comments" and then hit "Manage." You can now review or unhide any comments you deem necessary, making sure you don't miss out on anything crucial while still keeping the negativity at bay.
