India to build nuclear reactors for commercial ships, cement factories

Technology

India is rolling out compact nuclear reactors designed for commercial ships and big industries like cement manufacturing.
The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is working on 55 MW and 200 MW models, aiming to help power sectors that need reliable energy.
This move is part of PM Modi's plan to boost India's nuclear capacity from 8.8 GW all the way to 100 GW by 2047.

Government plans to amend old laws to allow private participation

To make this happen, the government wants to update some old laws so private players can get involved in civil nuclear projects.
If these changes go through, private firms could run their own nuclear plants and even import fuel from abroad, with new rules also limiting supplier liability.
These changes are expected to encourage greater private participation and investment in India's civil nuclear sector.
