Medical AI Mira outperforms doctors while Amie matches in planning
Meet Mira and Amie, two medical AI systems that just scored higher than human doctors in diagnosing and planning treatments.
Mira nailed 87.1% accuracy across hundreds of emergency cases (think tough stuff like pancreatic cancer and pneumonia), while doctors hit 78.1%.
Google's Amie also performed on par with doctors by sticking closely to clinical guidelines when creating treatment plans.
Researchers urge caution on clinical AI
Even with these wins, researchers say we shouldn't rush to let AI take over.
The tests happened under ideal conditions, not the messy reality of hospitals.
Both AIs made mistakes here and there, so experts agree, Jakob Kather said AI assistants "could help reduce the workload of healthcare professionals while leaving final decisions in human hands."
Before these systems show up in clinics everywhere, they'll need more work to make sure they're safe and reliable.
