Meet Tongnanlong zhimingi: China's giant new dinosaur find
Scientists just uncovered a massive new dinosaur species in Chongqing, China.
Named Tongnanlong zhimingi, this long-necked giant stretched between 23 and 28 meters (about 75 to 92 feet)—think three school busses end-to-end!
The discovery was published in December 2025.
What did they actually find?
The fossils, dug up from rocks about 147 million years old, included huge backbone pieces, a shoulder blade nearly as tall as a person, leg bones, and claws.
The remains were buried fast by ancient floods near lakeshores—almost like nature pressed pause for us to find them later.
Why does this dino matter?
Tongnanlong's bones had special air pockets and ridges that made its massive frame lighter—a clever design for such a huge animal.
Even cooler: scientists found it shares traits with dinosaurs from Africa, suggesting these giants were more widespread than previously thought.
This shakes up what we thought about where these giants roamed during the Jurassic period and helps us piece together how dinosaurs spread across the world.
