Meta sued over NameTag using Facebook and Instagram photos
Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is facing a lawsuit from families in Illinois and California.
They claim Meta used their photos without consent to feed NameTag, a tool for Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses that creates biometric data.
The suit says these images may have come from Facebook and Instagram content, raising big questions about privacy.
Lawsuit alleges Emu and Muse training
According to the complaint filed last week, Meta's AI models (Emu and Muse Image) were trained using these photos.
NameTag was designed to scan faces with smart glasses and identify people through their public Instagram accounts or connections.
Meta has pushed back, calling the lawsuit a "misrepresentation" and saying NameTag isn't available yet.
The complaint proposes class-action status for people in Illinois, California, and across the United States who uploaded images or fed data to Meta's gen AI systems, dating back to September 2021.
