Microsoft's Brad Smith urges calm, criticizes firms on AI rules
Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith wants everyone to take a breath when it comes to AI.
He says talk of AI taking over jobs overnight is overblown, and real changes will unfold slowly, not suddenly.
Smith also called out companies that push for strict rules on AI while racing ahead with their own projects, adding, "If somebody says, 'This technology is so powerful that we need a global treaty to slow it down,' then I would say: Then take your foot off the accelerator yourself if you think it's moving too fast."
Smith urges AI to empower workers
Smith pointed out that younger generations are pretty skeptical about all the AI buzz: he mentioned this spring graduation ceremonies where AI actually drew boos at mentions of AI.
For him, this was a wake-up call for tech leaders: instead of hyping up fear or job loss, he believes the industry should focus on making AI useful and empowering for workers.
