Mumbai Metro rolls out AI for smarter train wheel checks
Mumbai Metro recently installed India's first indigenously manufactured AI-powered system—called AWPMS—to keep an eye on train wheels at its Charkop depot.
Using lasers and cameras, it checks the wheels almost immediately, spotting wear or damage, which eliminates the need for manual inspection underneath.
How does this actually help?
AWPMS can measure wheel shape super accurately (down to 0.5mm) even while trains are moving.
If something's wrong, it automatically pings alerts to the team by SMS or email.
This means less downtime, longer-lasting wheels, and fewer old-school manual inspections—saving time and money.
Why should you care?
This upgrade is part of a bigger push toward automation and remote monitoring in Indian Railways.
By cutting down on manual work, Mumbai Metro is moving closer to things like driverless trains—and making your daily rides safer and more reliable along the way.
