NASA's Artemis II carries iPhone 17 Pro Maxes to space
NASA's Artemis II crew is taking smartphone photography to the next level, literally.
Astronauts Jeremy Hansen, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch brought iPhone 17 Pro Maxes along for their lunar mission after getting them during quarantine.
With internet and Bluetooth switched off, they're using the phones to capture photos and videos through spacecraft windows and around the rocket.
NASA alters preflight equipment procedures
This marks a shift in how NASA handles gear for missions.
Usually, hardware must pass strict safety checks (think Velcro to keep things from floating away).
Just as important, we challenged long-standing processes and qualified modern hardware for spaceflight on an expedited timeline, said Jared Isaacman.
While Apple wasn't directly involved, iPhones have made it to space before on private trips like Inspiration4.
The goal: blend cool new tech with top-notch safety standards.
