New compound reverses Alzheimer's symptoms in rats

Technology

Brazilian scientists have found a new compound, L10, that significantly improved Alzheimer's-like symptoms in rats.
Instead of just managing the disease, L10 works by clearing out extra copper from the brain—could represent a major advance for future treatments.

How does L10 work?

L10 stood out among nine tested compounds for pulling excess copper from brain plaques linked to Alzheimer's.
In rat studies, it brought copper levels back to normal and boosted memory performance in maze tests.
Bonus: it could potentially be taken as a pill and is predicted to cross into the brain easily.

Safe so far—and could help millions

Early safety checks show L10 isn't toxic to cells. The team hopes to start human trials soon.
Biochemist Giselle Cerchiaro described L10 as "extremely simple, safe, and effective," plus much cheaper than current drugs—which could really matter for millions living with Alzheimer's worldwide.
