Nobel laureate John Jumper leaves Google DeepMind for Anthropic
John Jumper, who helped create the game-changing AI AlphaFold and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Demis Hassabis, is leaving Google DeepMind after nearly nine years.
He shared on X that he'll be joining AI startup Anthropic after taking a break, a move that really shows how top AI talent is now flocking to newer companies, not just the big tech names.
Jumper thanked team for AlphaFold
Jumper played a key role in building AlphaFold, which predicts 3D protein shapes and has sped up biology research and drug discovery.
For this breakthrough, he and DeepMind cofounder and chief executive Demis Hassabis shared the Nobel Prize.
In his farewell, Jumper thanked his team warmly, saying Hassabis "took a real chance letting me lead the AlphaFold team," highlighting how much teamwork shaped this success.
