OpenAI hires Noam Shazeer amid AI safety scrutiny, lawsuits
Technology
OpenAI just brought on Noam Shazeer, who co-founded Character.AI, the chatbot company known for some pretty big controversies around harmful, unmoderated content.
The timing is interesting, since OpenAI itself is facing heat over its own AI safety and ongoing lawsuits.
Character. AI settled lawsuits, tightened safeguards
Shazeer's past at Character. AI raised eyebrows because the platform faced lawsuits after claims that its chatbots contributed to mental health issues, including a tragic 2024 case involving a 14-year-old.
Although Character.AI has since settled lawsuits and tightened safety rules, Shazeer joining OpenAI has many wondering if big AI companies are doing enough to keep users safe.
