OpenAI's ChatGPT drops below 50% to 46.4% per Sensor Tower
Technology
For the first time ever, OpenAI's ChatGPT holds less than half of the AI assistant market, dropping to 46.4% as of May 31, 2026, according to Sensor Tower.
That's a noticeable fall from earlier this year when it was still above 50%, showing just how quickly things can shift in tech.
Gemini and Claude gain amid boycotts
ChatGPT is still on top, but Gemini (27.7%) and Anthropic's Claude (10.3%) are catching up fast.
Claude is getting extra love for taking a stand against AI weaponization, while OpenAI has faced backlash for teaming up with the Pentagon and adding ads, sparking boycotts and some users jumping ship.
Smaller players like Grok, Perplexity, MetaAI, and DeepSeek are also joining in, though together they only make up about 5% of the market right now.
