Researchers recover 51 Eridani b by modeling telescope with flip
Technology
Researchers recovered the huge exoplanet called 51 Eridani b, about 97 light-years away.
This planet is roughly 11 times the mass of Jupiter and had been hidden by its star's bright glare until scientists used some clever technology to reveal it.
FLIP outperforms conventional image processing
Researchers used a new method called FLIP, which basically creates a digital twin of the telescope to fix its quirks.
This made FLIP outperformed conventional image-processing techniques two to 15 times.
The team hopes this trick will help uncover even more hidden worlds in the future.
Jason Wang of Northwestern University summed it up nicely: "We showed that we can actually recover a planet that people previously couldn't see."
