UK team CRANE's eVTOL wins global GoAero Challenge

Technology

Cranfield University's CRANE project just scored a big win, becoming one of eight global winners in the GoAero Challenge—out of 1,800 teams from 85 countries.
Their fully autonomous eVTOL drone is built for search, rescue, and disaster relief, making them the only UK team to reach this level.

What makes CRANE's eVTOL stand out?

This drone isn't just cool tech—it's designed to fly people and gear into risky spots using AI that adapts in real time.
Tested at Cranfield's Drone Flight Arena with input from charities and partners like Structural Battery Company and Easy Composites, it's all about helping where it matters most.

What's next for the team?

After successful prototype flights in September 2025, CRANE is gearing up for a full-scale flight test at the December 2026 Fly-Off Qualifier.
If all goes well, they'll compete live at NASA Ames in 2027 against other top emergency drone teams—with advice from experts like the Advanced Air Mobility Institute and London Air Ambulance Service.
