US restricts exports of Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5
The US government just put new export restrictions on Anthropic's advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
Now, the company needs a Commerce Department license before sharing these models with foreign persons anywhere in the world, including in-country transfers.
The main reason? The letter cited laws covering technology that could be used "for intelligence purposes by an adversary's military."
Fable 5 jailbreak vulnerability prompts pause
Fable 5 apparently has a "jailbreak" vulnerability, meaning people might find ways to bypass its safety features.
After this concern popped up, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick warned that breaking these new rules could lead to serious penalties.
Anthropic isn't thrilled: they've paused access to the models and called the restrictions "disproportionate," saying it could slow down innovation just as they're gearing up for a huge IPO.
