Vitamin B3 may help prevent skin cancer recurrence: Study

Technology

A new 2025 study suggests that taking a common vitamin B3 supplement—nicotinamide—right after your first skin cancer diagnosis can reduce the chances of getting another by up to 54%.
Researchers looked at health records from over 33,000 US veterans and found that those who took 500mg twice daily saw the biggest benefit.

Nicotinamide helps repair DNA

Nicotinamide helps repair DNA and protects your skin's immune defenses after sun exposure.
The strongest protection (a 54% drop in new cancers) came when people started the supplement early, especially against squamous cell carcinoma.
Waiting until after more recurrences made it less effective.

Simple extra step for anyone at high risk

Skin cancer is super common and tends to come back even if you're careful in the sun.
While nicotinamide isn't a substitute for sunscreen or regular checkups, starting it early could be a simple extra step for anyone at high risk.
