The action has shifted from hard court to clay in tennis and the ongoing 2022 Charleston Open (WTA 500) saw women's singles players Alize Cornet and Linda Fruhvirtova make progression. 16-year-old upcoming star Fruhvirtova defeated Ana Konjuh in a three-set battle. Fruhvirtova lost the first set versus Konjuh before making a comeback. She went on to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. As per WTA, this was her first professional win against a player from Croatia. This is also Fruhvirtova's tournament debut at the WTA 500 event. She is featuring as a wildcard. This is her fifth career win against a Top 100 player.
The likes of Alize Cornet and Amanda Anisimova held on for straight-set wins. Anisimova was a break down twice against Sachia Vickery before making a comeback to seal the deal 6-0, 7-5. It was also a similar scoreline for Cornet, who was ousted in the round of 64 at both the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open respectively.
Following her win, Fruhvirtova said it's a great motivation to keep working hard. "These are the matches and the moments I've always worked hard for, and it's a great motivation to keep working hard and believing, and I'm enjoying it," she said.
Petra Kvitova suffered a left thigh injury while trailing versus Poland's Magdalena Frech. She had to retire with the scoreline reading 7-6(6), 3-2. As per WTA, the 24-year-old Frech was previously 0-22 in her career against Top 50 players. Her previous best win by ranking came against then-World No. 67 Mayar Sherif last month at the Indian Wells.
