What's the story

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has shortlisted two Indian cities, Ahmedabad and Kolkata, as potential hosts for the semifinals of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The ICC has selected eight venues for this global event.

Venue selection

Five Indian cities have been shortlisted

As per Cricbuzz, along with Ahmedabad and Kolkata, the other Indian cities chosen are Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. The three Sri Lankan venues include two stadiums in Colombo and one in Kandy. However, the final decision on the location of the final match is still pending. It will depend on which teams make it to the final stage of the tournament.

Match conditions

Semi-finals and final to be played in Colombo

The semi-final matches will be played in Colombo if Sri Lanka or Pakistan make it to the last four. If neither team reaches this stage, both semis will be held in India. The final match will also be played in Colombo if Pakistan makes it that far. These decisions are yet to be finalized by the ICC.

Competition structure

Italy to make their T20 WC debut in 2026

The 20-team tournament will follow the same format as the 2024 edition in the USA and West Indies. Teams will be divided into four groups of five each. All 13 Test-playing nations, along with Canada, Netherlands, UAE, Nepal, Oman and Namibia have qualified for this month-long event. Italy are set to make its debut at this global championship.

Tournament progression

What is the format of the tournament?

After the group stage, a Super Eights phase will be held with the top two teams from each group. The ICC has confirmed that "the Super Eights will feature two groups of four sides, with the top two finishers from each group then progressing to the knockout semifinals." India are the defending champions after beating South Africa in June 2024 final.
