What's the story

Apple's new AirPods Max 2 headphones have been torn down by iFixit, and the results are pretty much as expected. The tech site found that the latest model is "basically the same" as its predecessor, which was launched in 2020. A comparison of their internal components revealed no major differences, except for the updated H2 chips inside each earcup of the new model.

Repair issues

iFixit suggests improvements for Apple

The teardown also highlighted that Apple has not addressed some common failure points in the AirPods Max, like condensation buildup in humid environments. Further, iFixit noted that Apple does not provide parts or repair manuals for these headphones. The site suggested that if Apple made instructions and components available through its self-service repair program, and improved accessibility of the battery and USB-C port, it could significantly improve the repairability and lifespan of AirPods Max.

Information

How repairable are AirPods Max headphones?

The lack of design updates in the AirPods Max 2 means that these headphones are no more repairable than their predecessors. iFixit had given the first-generation model a repairability score of 6/10.
