What's the story

Australia responded to their defeat against Bangladesh in the Test series opener with a fitting display at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. They thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs just after tea on Day 2. While Mitchell Starc concluded the Test with a record 10-wicket haul, Bangladesh perished for a sub-100 score twice. Here are the key stats.

Summary

A look at match summary

In one of the shortest Tests, Australia won the toss and elected to field first.

A stunning six-wicket haul from Starc helped Australia bowl out Bangladesh for a mere 64. His spell included a wicket off the match's first ball.

Australia also suffered a dramatic collapse, but Cameron Green, Steve Smith, and Nathan Lyon propelled them to 210.

Shoriful Islam took a historic seven-wicket haul for Bangladesh, who later perished for 95 in 38.3 overs. Starc took four wickets.

Record

Shoriful Islam scripts history with seven-fer

Shoriful's sensational figures of 7/48 (15 overs) are now the best-ever by a Bangladesh pacer in Tests.

These are also the best innings figures by a Bangladesh bowler in an away Test, surpassing Taijul Islam's 7/138 against Zimbabwe earlier this year.

Hasan Mahmud's 6/55 in the first Test in Darwin were previously the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia in Tests.

Day 2

Starc emulates these veterans

In the second innings, Bangladesh struggled against Starc's relentless pace and accuracy. The left-arm seamer took 4/39 in just 10 overs, including three maidens.

Starc concluded with match figures of 10/51, completing his fourth 10-fer.

The left-arm pacer recorded his fourth match haul of 10 wickets, surpassing legends like Malcom Marshall, Makhaya Ntini, and Ian Botham, among others.

Starc also has 19 fifers to his name.

Milestone

Fastest fifer (balls bowled)

In the first innings, Bangladesh's batting collapse was even more swift and brutal, as they slumped to 15/5. The team could only manage a paltry total of 64 in 34 overs.

Starc took just 22 balls to complete his five-wicket haul, the sixth-fastest recorded fifer in men's Tests (balls bowled).

The speedster recorded 6/12 in 10 overs, including six maidens.

Record

Starc surpasses Dale Steyn

Starc's stellar performance not only helped Australia secure a much-needed win but also propelled him to 10th place on the all-time Test wicket-takers' list.

The left-arm quick now has 445 wickets from 107 Tests at an average of 26.12.

He surpassed South African legend Dale Steyn in terms of Test wickets. The latter concluded his Test career with 439 wickets.
