IPL: CSK to invest in women's cricket, says CEO
What's the story
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners, are aiming to enter women's cricket. The announcement was recently made by CSK's CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, at the Invest in Tamil Nadu conclave. He said that while the investment isn't imminent, there are plans for future investments in women's cricket and possibly other sports as well. Here are further details.
Prospects
Major shift for CSK
Viswanathan said, "Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women's cricket." He also hinted at the possibility of exploring other sports in the future. This announcement comes as a major shift for the Yellow Army, who are yet to enter the women's cricket market despite the launch of the Women's Premier League (WPL).
Team status
CSK yet to join WPL
Currently, CSK are one of the IPL franchises without a women's team in any league. The WPL currently has five teams - Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz. Other big IPL franchises like Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants are yet to join the women's league.
CSK
One of the most successful IPL franchises
CSK are the joint-most successful franchises in the IPL, with MI. Both sides have five titles. MS Dhoni has been the heartbeat and face of the Yellow Army, leading the side to each of the five IPL honors. He also bolstered the side in the now-defunct T20 Champions League. Star power and a massive fan following will certainly power the Super Kings' entry into women's cricket.
