Daryl Mitchell has broken a long-standing ODI record for the most runs scored by a New Zealand batter against India in a calendar year. The right-handed batter surpassed Chris Cairns's 403 runs, which was set back in 1999. Mitchell achieved this feat during the second ODI match between India and New Zealand at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on November 7. The middle-order batter went on to score a vital half-century in New Zealand's paltry total of 134/10 in the 47-over-per-side rain-curtailed game.

Mitchell's path to the record was paved by his stellar performances in a three-match series against India in January 2026.
He scored 84, 131*, and 137 runs, respectively, which powered New Zealand to a stunning 2-1 win.
In the first ODI of the ongoing five-match series on November 4, he chipped in with a knock of 28 runs.
With his 55 in the second game, Mitchell has raced to a total of 435 runs against India this year at an average of 108.75 and a strike rate of 93.75.
New achievement
Most ODI runs by a NZ batter against one team
Mitchell's tally of 435* runs in 2026 has also helped him break Kane Williamson's record for the most ODI runs by a New Zealand batter against one team in a calendar year.
Williamson had scored 411 runs in seven ODIs against Sri Lanka in 2015.
This new achievement further cements Mitchell's place among the top ODI batsmen for New Zealand.
