Kolkata Police tighten security for IND-SA 1st Test: Here's why
What's the story
In the wake of a deadly blast near Delhi's Red Fort, the Kolkata Police have stepped up security ahead of India's first Test against South Africa. The match is scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens, starting on November 14. Both teams, who are already in the city, will be under heightened security during their stay. Here are further details.
Incident details
Blast in Delhi's Chandni Chowk area
The explosion in Delhi on Monday evening killed 10 people and left at least 24 injured. So far, only two of the eight bodies recovered from the site have been identified, while six remain unidentified. The cause of the blast is still being investigated, but it coincided with police personnel from Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana busting an interstate terror module, recovering large quantities of bomb-making materials, and an assault rifle.
Security measures
Security arrangements for India, South Africa
In light of the incident, the Kolkata Police have devised a detailed security plan for both Indian and South African teams. The plan includes their movement to and from the stadium, practice sessions, and match days. Special NAKA checks and increased surveillance have been initiated around Eden Gardens with officers deployed at all major entry and exit points.
Partnership
CAB working closely with police
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is working closely with the police to ensure adequate safety measures for players, officials, and spectators. Security at team hotels has also been beefed up. A joint meeting between CAB officials and senior police officers was held to finalize operational details and discuss additional precautionary measures in light of the Delhi incident.
