What's the story

In a major shake-up in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have traded their star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals (RR) for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. The deal, which has been approved by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is being hailed as one of the biggest trades in IPL history. IPL's official website confirmed the news on Saturday.

Trade dynamics

CSK's trade strategy and concerns

CSK's decision to let go of Jadeja, a key player in their squad, has raised eyebrows. With MS Dhoni nearing retirement, there are questions about who will take over as the face of CSK after him. Notably, Jadeja's fees has been revised from ₹18 crore to ₹14 crore. Samson, meanwhile, has been traded for his existing fees of ₹18 crore. The value of Curran (₹2.4 crore) remains the same.

Trade approval

BCCI clears trade after technical glitch

As per Cricbuzz, the trade was initially stalled due to a technical glitch related to the absence of an overseas slot in RR's squad. However, it has now been approved by the BCCI. Jadeja joined CSK in 2012 through a secret bid and has since become an integral part of the team, winning several matches for them including the 2023 final.

Career highlights

Jadeja's journey with CSK and future prospects

Jadeja played 185 IPL matches for CSK, scoring 2,000 runs and taking over 140 wickets at an economy rate of less than eight. He has also played 14 CLT20 matches for the franchise. Despite reportedly parting ways with CSK in 2022 after a brief stint as captain, this time around, they have parted on very cordial terms.

Player acquisition

CSK's long-term pursuit of Samson

On the other hand, CSK's interest in acquiring Samson has been long-standing. The franchise had been eyeing him for the last three years, and their quest for an Indian wicketkeeper-top-order batter has finally ended with this deal. Samson, who has been leading RR since the 2021 season, has been a prolific performer for them. Having played 149 IPL games for RR, Samson has scored 4,027 runs at an average of 31.70. The tally includes 23 fifties, a couple of tons.
