What's the story

Indian batter Ishan Kishan ended his wait for a century in the 2nd ODI against Afghanistan at Lucknow's Ekana Stadium. Ishan added a 224-run stand with Shubman Gill after India, electing to bat, lost two wickets before 100 runs. The former, who accelerated after reaching the 50-run mark, reached his second ton in the format. Here are the key stats.

Knock

Ishan accelerates after reaching fifty

Ishan came in when India were down to 96/2 with Rohit Sharma's departure in the 14th over. While the former treaded carefully, skipper Gill consistently found boundaries. Ishan, who was being perturbed by spinners, completed a nearly run-a-ball half-century. He upped the ante thereafter, scoring 53 runs off just 19 deliveries to reach his ton. Ishan continued to deal in boundaries before falling to Nangeyalia Kharoti in the 37th over.

Milestone

Third-fastest ton against Afghanistan

Ishan departed for 125 off 79 balls, a knock laced with 14 fours and 7 sixes. His 71-ball ton is now the third-fastest against Afghanistan (by balls). He is only behind Eoin Morgan (57 balls in Manchester, 2019) and Rohit Sharma (63 balls in Delhi, 2023). Gill, who also completed his ton in his double-century stand with Ishan, reached three figures in 77 balls.

Numbers

Second ODI ton; 1,000 runs

As mentioned, this was Ishan's second century in the format. His only other ton was a record-breaking 210 that he scored against Bangladesh in 2022. The left-handed batter also has seven half-centuries in the format. During his knock, Ishan also raced to 1,000 runs in ODI cricket. He attained the feat in his 29th ODI (26 innings).
