Kylian Mbappe handed three-match ban after red card
Paris Saint-Germain's forward, Kylian Mbappe, has been handed a three-match suspension post his red card in the Ligue 1 match against Nimes. Mbappe was shown the card after his push on Teji Savanier, the Nimes mid-fielder. Interestingly, Savanier was also shown the red. He will serve a 5-match suspension for his initial tackle on Mbappe. More details follow.
Details of the encounter: What led to this?
Mbappe was shown the yellow card in the first half of the match after he took the ball away before a free-kick by Nimes. During the second half stoppage time, Savanier pulled Mbappe to the ground and then the teenager reacted by pushing him, which made the referee show the red cards to both players. PSG ended up winning the match 4-2.
Mbappe's send-off reminiscent of Beckham's 1998 World Cup foul
Mbappe's retaliation, after being fouled, reminded football fans of a similar David Beckham challenge on Diego Simeone during the 1998 World Cup. Beckham was also sent off and received huge backlash from supporters as Argentina defeated England in the match.
What next for the teenage footballing sensation?
The ban will not be effective in the Champions League where PSG will be facing Liverpool on September 19. However, Mbappe will miss Ligue 1 encounters against Saint-Etienne on September 14, Rennes on September 23 and Reims on September 26. Presently, the World Cup winner is with his national squad, gearing up for the UEFA Nations League for their match against Germany.
