Australia in search of a finisher like Dhoni, says Langer

Australia in search of a finisher like Dhoni, says Langer

Australian cricket team head coach Justin Langer said his side needs a limited-overs finisher like MS Dhoni. Australia, who have done well in T20Is of late, are struggling in ODIs. After the ICC World Cup 2019, the Aussies lost 1-2 against India, and suffered a 3-0 loss against South Africa recently. Here's what Langer said.

NZ series gives Australia a chance to find a finisher

After two successive ODI series defeats, the Aussies are set to play a three-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning on March 13. The series provides Australia an opportunity to test the depth in their middle order. For a side which is dependent on its top order, it needs to find someone who can fill in as the finisher's role.

Everyone in the world is looking for a finisher: Langer

"We've been fortunate in the past with a Mike Hussey or a Michael Bevan who are masters at it," Langer was quoted as saying by ICC. "MS Dhoni is a master of it. Jos Buttler has been brilliant at it for England. What I've learned is everyone in the world is looking for it," he added.

Langer wants someone to grab number six position

Against SA, Mitchell Marsh played at No 6 for Australia in the second and third ODI, scoring 32 and 36 respectively. The position is something Australia want someone to make it their own. "So it's a role that's there for someone to grab hold of," said Langer. "No one at this stage has absolutely secured it. But there are good opportunities there for someone."

Australia have had uncertainty in the finishing role

Over the last year, as many as 13 batsmen have occupied positions from four to seven for Australia in ODIs. At least nine different batsmen tried out at No 6. But nobody has gone on to seal the deal. It remains to be seen who can come in and get the job done. The likes of Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh look ideal bets.
