He beat Argentine World number 59 Leonardo Mayer 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. After a couple of uncomfortable five-setters, Roger Federer looked like he was back to his best against 31st- seeded Feliciano Lopez. He registered a straightforward 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory over the Spaniard to progress to the pre-quarters in an excellent display of exquisite tennis. Should both Nadal and Federer win their subsequent matches they will meet each other in a high-profile semifinal clash.
