What's the story

A low-scoring contest saw New Zealand thrash England in the opening ODI, held at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Harry Brook's stunning innings of 135 runs headlined the first innings of the game as England posted 223/10. Zakary Foulkes took four wickets. Though NZ also lost some early wickets, fifties from Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell powered them over the line.

1st innings

Brook rescues England after early strikes

The English top-order crumbled early on, leaving the team at a precarious 10/4. Brook's response to the early collapse was nothing short of aggressive. He was well supported by Jamie Overton, who contributed to England's recovery with his 46 off 54 balls in a seventh-wicket stand of 87. Brook made 135 as England went from 56/6 to 223/10 in 35.2 overs.

Chase

Here is NZ's response

The Kiwis were also off to a poor start, having been reduced to 24/3. However, a 92-run stand for the fifth wicket between Mitchell and Bracewell rescued them. While Mitchell remained unbeaten on 78, Bracewell made 51 as the Kiwis prevailed in just 36.4 overs. Captain Mitchell Santner scored a fine 27 in NZ's four-wicket win.

Brook

1,000 ODI runs for Brook

Brook smashed nine fours and 11 sixes en route to his 135 off 101 balls. This knock powered him past 1,000 ODI runs. He has now raced to 1,130 runs at 37.66. His strike rate is 103.86. This was his second ton and also his best score in the format (50s: 6). This was his maiden 50-plus score across five innings against NZ.

Feats

Brook scripts these records

As per ESPNcricinfo, Brook's 135 is the second-highest ODI score by an England skipper as a non-opener. He also became only the second England skipper to hammer 10 or more sixes in an ODI. Sri Lanka's Thisara Perera is the only visiting batter to hammer more sixes in an ODI innings in NZ than Brook (13 in Mount Maunganui, 2019)

Foulkes

Four-fer in second ODI for Foulkes

While most of the NZ pacers made the ball talk, Zakary Foulkes stood out with a four-wicket haul. The left-arm pacer finished his spell with 4/41 from seven overs, having also bowled a maiden. This was his second ODI as his debut game got washed out due to rain. Hence, he did not get to bowl in that affair.

Information

Three-fer for Duffy

Three of the final four England wickets were taken by Jacob Duffy, who finished with 3/55 from six overs. He has now raced to 29 wickets from 15 ODIs at an average of 24.20. This was his maiden outing against the Brits.

Mitchell

Third 50-plus score for Mitchell vs England

Mitchell's 78* off 91 balls was laced with seven fours and two sixes. This knock takes him to a tally of 2,119 runs from 53 ODIs. He averages a stunning 50.45 in the format, having smashed six centuries and 10 fifties. He has now raced to 274 runs against England at 91.33. This includes two fifties and a ton across six innings.

Bracewell

Bracewell gets past 800 ODI runs

Bracewell made a run-a-ball 51 with the help of six fours. The left-handed batter now has 808 runs from 35 ODIs at an average of 38.47. His career tally has two tons besides three fifties.
