A low-scoring contest saw New Zealand thrash England in the opening ODI, held at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Harry Brook's stunning innings of 135 runs headlined the first innings of the game as England posted 223/10. Zakary Foulkes took four wickets. Though NZ also lost some early wickets, fifties from Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell powered them over the line.

While most of the NZ pacers made the ball talk, Zakary Foulkes stood out with a four-wicket haul. The left-arm pacer finished his spell with 4/41 from seven overs, having also bowled a maiden.
