    Pak cricketer Sharjeel Khan gets a 5-year ban for spot-fixing

    What's the story

    Pakistani cricketer Sharjeel Khan was slapped with a five-year ban over charges of spot-fixing in the Pakistan Super League.

    A 3-member anti-corruption tribunal formed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) pronounced the verdict according to which the player will be suspended from playing all forms of cricket for next two-and-half years and will be put under close observation for the rest of the term.

    As part of PCB's investigation into an international syndicate's alleged attempts to corrupt the Pakistan Super League (PSL), six players - Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Nasir Jamshed, Shahzaib Hasan, Mohammad Irfan, and Mohammad Nawaz, were provisionally suspended, in early 2017.

    Suspecting of their involvement in spot-fixing during PSL's opening match, a separate tribunal was formed to probe Sharjeel and Khalid.

    He was alleged of intentionally playing dot balls during the second season of PSL.

    Sharjeel was found guilty on five charges which he has accepted.

    The 5-year ban against him will take effect from the day of his suspension which happened on 10 Feb.

    In 2011, Pak players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were handed 5-year ban by ICC anti-corruption tribunal for spot-fixing during 2010 series in England.
