In 2014, Virat Kohli became the first Indian to be adjudged the Player of the Tournament (T20 World Cup). He hammered 314 runs from six matches at 106.33, the most in an edition. However, India were the runners-up. Kohli won the award again in 2016, having slammed 296 runs at 98.66. India's campaign ended with a defeat to the West Indies in the semi-final.

In 2024, Jasprit Bumrah joined Kohli as the second Indian on this tally. Bumrah played a vital role in India's title-winning run, scalping 15 wickets at an average of just 8.27. His economy was a sensational 4.17, the lowest for a bowler in a T20 World Cup edition. Notably, Bumrah took 2/18 as India beat South Africa in the final.
