What's the story

Jose Mourinho generally shines in his second season at a club in the Premier League. His previous exploits over two spells at Chelsea and the 2017-18 season with Manchester United suggested the same. However, at Tottenham Hotspur this season, Jose has fallen behind. His side lost momentum at a crucial stage and Spurs are now found calling. We analyze their struggle.

Start

Tottenham were flying high in their first nine games

Looking back, Spurs were flying high under Mourinho in November 2020. Mourinho's tactical masterclass helped Spurs beat Manchester City 2-0 as they were top of the Premier League table. Including that win, Tottenham were unbeaten in eight successive league games after an opening 1-0 loss against Everton (W6 D2 L1). They had collected 20 points from nine games.

Performance

Tottenham looked good until the game against Arsenal

The win against City handed Spurs a lot of confidence. Post that, they drew 0-0 at Chelsea and then thrashed Arsenal 3-1. With 24 points from 11 games, Mourinho looked set to keep the pressure on the other top sides and Spurs were playing solid football. Besides these performances, they had also thrashed Manchester United 6-1 in October. Things looked under control.

Momentum

Spurs lose momentum, going winless in four

Tottenham dropped points against a resolute Crystal Palace despite taking a 1-0 lead through Harry Kane. Problems mounted after champions Liverpool edged past them 2-1 at Anfield. Leicester City took advantage of Spurs' drop in confidence and beat them 2-0 away. And then another 1-1 draw against Wolves saw Spurs lose momentum.

Information

The problems continue for Mourinho

Tottenham finally registered a victory, beating Leeds United 3-0. They drew their game against Fulham and then beat Sheffield United. However, Liverpool completed the double over them by winning 3-1, before Brighton and Chelsea inflicted successive 1-0 defeats on Jose's men.

Failure

Tottenham have lost three successive games, scoring only one goal

With three successive defeats, Tottenham have dropped down to eighth. They have claimed just four points in their last five games. Looking at the last three matches, Tottenham have registered just 18 shots, with eight on target. It has resulted in just one goal. Their opponents dominated the numbers both in terms of overall shots and shots on target.

Form

Spurs have picked up nine points from last 10 games

To see Spurs claiming just nine points from their last 10 Premier League matches, is worrying. They have also claimed just 13 points from their last 12 matches. A total of 23 points have been dropped. Tottenham have struggle to score goals of late in the absence of Harry Kane. They have managed to score 34 in 21 games, besides conceding 22.
