What's the story

George Russell of Mercedes has won the Dutch Grand Prix Sprint, cutting his Formula 1 2026 championship deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli down to 56 points. The win at Zandvoort was Russell's third Sprint victory of the season. He started from pole position and held off an early challenge from Lando Norris before the latter fell behind Charles Leclerc's Scuderia Ferrari.

Race dynamics

Leclerc overtakes Norris for 2nd place

Despite being on softer tires, Leclerc managed to overtake Norris for second place with a brilliant move at the first corner on lap 18.

Meanwhile, championship leader Antonelli had taken fourth from Oscar Piastri's McLaren on the opening lap.

However, he could only manage a fourth-place finish after being unable to pass Norris for third position.

Standings and weather update

Russell's win has brought him within 56 points of Antonelli in the championship standings.

However, Antonelli's overall lead has increased to 53 points as Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton finished seventh where he qualified.

The rain started pouring just as Russell crossed the finish line, making his final lap "very sketchy" if it had come earlier.

Post-race comments

Russell and Norris's take on the race

Russell said he knew any overtakes would come late in the race and planned to manage his tires through high-speed corners.

He also noted that once Leclerc was behind him, they both pulled away from the rest of the pack.

Norris, who had been a potential threat to Russell but was eventually overtaken by Leclerc, admitted they lacked pace and have work to do.
