Shreyas Iyer resumes batting after injury, heads to BCCI's CoE
What's the story
Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has resumed batting after a long injury layoff. The right-handed batsman batted for nearly an hour in Mumbai on December 24 without any discomfort, The Times of India reported. He is now headed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for further assessment and to gain clarity on his return timelines. Here's more.
Injury impact
Iyer's injury sidelined him from competitive cricket
Iyer's last appearance was during the ODI series against Australia in October. A blunt injury to his abdomen had kept him out of action for the entire Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and ODIs against South Africa. He is now working toward a return to competitive cricket, with hopes of making it back for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Recovery update
BCCI official comments on Iyer's recovery
A BCCI official privy to developments told TOI, "Shreyas Iyer had a very unfortunate injury in Australia and it made him miss a lot of competitive cricket. The good sign is that he is pain-free at the moment and batted without any trouble in Mumbai on Wednesday." While his return for India-New Zealand series remains uncertain, a late Vijay Hazare Trophy comeback isn't ruled out.
Training resumption
Iyer's training and assessment at BCCI CoE
Iyer is likely to spend four to six days at the CoE in Bengaluru, where he will get clarity on his return timelines. The official added, "He is already back to regular training in the gym. So no red flags there at the moment but all depends on the CoE assessment." His participation in India's next ODI series against New Zealand from January 11 remains uncertain but isn't completely ruled out yet.
