What's the story

Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has explained the rationale behind releasing Glenn Maxwell ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League auction. The Australian all-rounder was one of the six players let go by PBKS. Maxwell's return to PBKS in 2025 wasn't as expected as he managed only 48 runs from six innings at a strike rate of just under 98.

Performance review

Assessment of Maxwell's performance

Ponting was honest about the decision, admitting that they didn't see how the star Australian could fit into their playing XI. He said, "Love Glenn and what he brings to the game. Unfortunately, last year, we weren't able to get the best out of him." The coach further explained their decision by saying they didn't think Maxwell would be part of their starting team this season.

Career trajectory

Maxwell's IPL journey with Punjab Kings

The 2025 season marked Maxwell's return to PBKS after a four-year stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His first season with PBKS in 2014 was explosive as he scored at an astonishing strike rate of nearly 188 in 16 matches. However, his second stint in 2020 wasn't as successful as he managed to score 108 runs in 11 innings without a six.

Other players released by Punjab Kings

Along with Maxwell, PBKS has also released Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, and Praveen Dubey. The franchise is now preparing for the upcoming mini-auction scheduled for around December 16. With a remaining purse of ₹11.5 crore and four slots to fill, it remains to be seen if any other franchise will show interest in signing Maxwell or if he will go unsold.
